Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Assalamu Alaikum Everyone.

I hope this message finds you well today. I am delighted to be appointed the new Principal of Iqra School starting Term Three. I have already been so welcomed to the school by wonderful staff and students who have gone out of their way to make sure I am well supported here at Iqra School. I have taught over two decades in a number of roles in educational leadership, including ACG Sunderland School and St. Cuthbert’s College. I have a passion for primary education, a commitment to inclusivity and a dedication to fostering a collaborative learning environment. I have gained invaluable experience raising students’ progress and improving outcomes for students. My values align seamlessly with the mission of Iqra School and I am eager to begin work alongside specialised staff, hard working teachers and wonderful students. The Board of Trustees have enabled me to have a wonderful transition with Dr. Stephen Kendall-Jones, and I am grateful for the smooth handover that has transpired.

It is a privilege and humbling to become part of the Iqra School community amongst the special character that only Iqra School can bring. Thank you so much for all the support already shown me. I am excited to start a new chapter here at Iqra School. Your engagement and cooperation are invaluable to me as we continue to cultivate a nurturing, respectful and enriching environment for all our students. Please pop in and say hello when you are next at Iqra School!

Kind regards,

Leanne Chartrand

Drop off and pick up
11 Feb 2026

Assalamu'alaykum,

Dear Parents and caregivers,

Due to congestion at the front of the school during drop off in the mornings, the school (starting from Monday 16 February) will have the bottom court gate unlocked 8:00-8:30am so families can drive through the alley from Great North Road, into the back carpark, drop off their children at the gate.  The child then walks up the concrete stairs to the entrance to the school.  The parent then drives around the front of the school onto Hugh Brown Drive and out to Great North Road this way. This is the preferred gate for children in the mornings to allow the flow of traffic to resume on Hugh Brown Drive. Before 8:00am or after 8:30am please use the front entrances.

This is the same location as dismissal at the end of the day.

If your child is a Year 1,2,3 student, please know the teachers of Year 1,2,3 will have their students ready for dismissal at 3:25pm each day to avoid congestions when the older children arrive on the lower court for dismissal.

Kind regards,

Iqra School

Reminder: Structured Maths, English and Special Character Parent Information Session (Wednesday, 11 February 2026)
10 Feb 2026

RE. Structured Maths, English and Special Character Parent Information Session

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Iqra School is implementing the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA) in Year 1-8 to support our students'  reading, writing and spelling development. This programme is part of the broader shift to structured literacy being adopted in schools across New Zealand. The structured literacy approach emphasizes the explicit teaching of foundational literacy skills, such as phonological awareness, letter-sound knowledge, and oral language. This evidence-based method helps ensure that all students, regardless of their individual learning needs, build strong literacy foundations.

Iqra School is also implementing the structured Maths programme.  This is built on a progression of clear learning lessons covering its unique scope and sequence to support New Zealand Curriculum knowledge. This allows for regular opportunities to be engaged in explicit instruction through the gradual release of responsibility and Science of Math key concepts. Building mastery and practice following explicit instruction happens naturally in the lesson, which is essential for developing automatic recall and working memory.

Alongside this, equal attention is being given to our Special Character Programme, which continues to play a central role in our students’ learning experience. With dedicated Quran, Islamic Studies, and Arabic teachers, the programme is being thoughtfully adapted to align with structured approaches, while nurturing the spiritual, moral, and emotional development of our students. To provide you with a clear understanding of the structured English and Maths programmes in Year 1-8, as well as gain an understanding of how the Special Character programme will adapt to meet our students’ needs, we will be hosting an Information Session for parents and caregivers.

Date: Wednesday 11 February
Start time: 3:45 PM – 4:30 PM
Location: School Hall

The session will cover:

●        An overview of the Better Start Literacy Approach and how it supports literacy development within the structured English programme.

●        Key strategies your child will be using to develop their Maths knowledge and skills.

●        Main aspects of the Special Character programme and how it is adapted to meet our students’ needs

●        Time for questions and discussion with the teachers implementing the program.

We highly encourage your attendance as this is an excellent opportunity to gain insight into your child's literacy and maths  learning journey and how we, as a school, are keeping a focus on our school’s Special Character.

We look forward to seeing you there and working together to support our students’ growth at Iqra School.
